This Workshop on In Situ Methods in Nanomechanics aims to bring together researchers with an interest in combining nanomechanical (or closely related nanotribological) testing with real-time monitoring techniques such as transmission or scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, chemical spectroscopy, electrical current measurement, acoustic emission detection, etc. These emerging hybrid methods enable the building of direct relationships between, for example, microstructure evolution and distinct characteristics of force vs. displacement, or better yet, stress vs. strain curves. Such methods promise to improve our understanding of the origins of mechanical properties, and of how mechanical and other properties are coupled.

PROGRAM

The workshop begins with an opening reception at The Claremont Resort & Spa in the evening of August 1, then proceeds to two half-day seminar sessions and a poster session at LBL on August 2, and concludes with a half-day seminar session at LBL on August 3. Adding to a strong lineup of internationally recognized invited speakers, FEI Company will provide an invited talk on its vision of the future of in situ methods. The opening reception, lunch at LBL on August 2 and 3, and an offsite dinner event on August 2 are included with the workshop’s registration fee. The Claremont Resort & Spa is the official hotel of the workshop.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The workshop’s program has a limited number of timeslots available for contributed talks pertaining to relevant experimental or computational research. Those wishing to provide a contributed talk, or a poster for the poster session, are encouraged to submit an abstract of no more than 200 words, as a Microsoft Word document, to in.situ.workshop@gmail.com. Please provide the presenter’s complete contact information below the abstract, and please specify a preference for a poster presentation if that is the case. Your submission will be considered for a poster presentation if not accepted as a contributed talk.
